Mark 14:32-42 (Click here to read on YouVersion)
For the next several days, we will be reading texts from Scripture that describe the Passion of Jesus: His journey to the cross. Today, we read about Jesus, the Man of Sorrows, showing us His fully human nature in agony over the impending crucifixion.
A keystone of Christian belief is that Jesus is at once fully man and fully God. Theologians call this the hypostatic union. This idea is essential to our understanding of God. We believe that God became flesh, dwelled among us, lived as a fully human being, died a human's death and that His human body was resurrected.
Gethsemane means "oil press." It is the place of immense emotional pressure as Jesus' humanity struggles with the sorrows and sins of the world that He will soon carry. Read this passage through the lens of God's immense love for you. He agonizes over your sin yet is still willing to absorb the pain and consequences of your sin so that He can dwell with you for eternity. That's how amazing His love is!
He emptied Himself of His divine privilege that He might give you eternal life.
