Luke 16.19-31 (Click here to read on YouVersion)
The basic premise of this parable from Jesus is this: You can't follow Jesus and ignore the poor and needy. If we do scorn those in poverty and in need, then Jesus is saying that we have found the pathway to a place called Hell.
The way of Jesus is the way of love. And for Jesus, love is a very pragmatic and practical term. Love means to give sacrificially and compassionately care. There is no understanding in the scriptures of a Christ follower who ignores the needs of the least in society.
Lent is a season of fasting and generosity. We don't just abstain from foods or pleasures, but we find ways to give of the things God has blessed us with so that we might be a blessing to others. At Believers Fellowship, that kind of generosity is something we always strive to practice. But especially in this season, let's remember these words of Jesus that heaven is found when we care more for other people than we do our own possessions.
